2018 Babe Ruth Information

New Canaan Baseball for players aged 13-18

Once players reach “Baseball Age”  13 (age as of May 1st), they are eligible to play in the Babe Ruth League.  The Babe Ruth league is open to New Canaan residents who are league age 13 and older.  The League is broken up into three Divisions:

  • Prep – 13 years old
  • Majors – 14 & 15 years old and
  • Senior – 16 years old and up (Summer Only)

Babe Ruth Prep Division (Eligible Age 13)

The Babe Ruth Prep division plays a single, full season from early April through mid-June.  We will form 2 or 3 teams depending upon enrollment.  We form teams through a draft process that will be based in part on an evaluation session to be held in early spring.  The evaluation is for placement purposes only; all registrants will play.

Teams practice under the direction of a parent coach once a week.  We play in the Fairfield County Babe Ruth League (FCBRL).  We find the League to be the best, most organized option for the boys and parents.  They will play between 16 and 24 games, 2 or 3 per week, against other Babe Ruth teams from around Fairfield County.  FCBRL is a competitive “close travel” program that provides us with a good level of competition against other town teams.

Games are played on full-sized (60/90) fields.  Home games are usually played at Conner Field (at Saxe), Coppo Field in Waveny Park or Mead Park.  There tends to be one game during the week and games on either Saturday or Sunday or both.

Babe Ruth Majors Division (Eligible Age 14 & 15)

The Babe Ruth Major Division season is broken into two parts: the Dogwood Season and Regular Season.  This is to accommodate both middle-schoolers who want to play all spring and the younger high school players who want to play baseball beyond the end of the Freshman and Junior Varsity seasons.  (High school league rules prohibit players from playing on two teams at once.)

Again, all players who register will play; there are no try-outs.  We will form 1 or 2 teams for the Dogwood Season and then expand to 2 or 3 teams once the high school players are added.  The Majors also play in FCBRL and play on Connor, Copo and Waveny Park fields.

SENIOR BABE RUTH DIVISION (Eligible Age 16 - 18, Summer only)

This division is for 16 to 18 year-olds.  Players in JV high school play end their season in early May so this is the perfect program for those players who are 16 or older.  In the past, there has been one team from New Canaan that is formed up after the end of the high school season.    They will play in the local Senior Babe Ruth league competing against teams from Greenwich, Stamford, and Darien.

There are usually 14 or so games during the season.  Depending on the caliber of play and level of interest, it will be determined whether New Canaan will participate with Darien and/or Stamford to create an All-Star 16-18 team to compete in the district, state and regional tournaments.  The schedule for the Senior Babe team runs from early June to early July and includes games on weekday evenings and on Saturdays. A league championship tournament is held at the end of the season for an additional 2 to 4 games.
