Overview

New Canaan Baseball is constantly looking to improve the quality of the fields and facilities that we use.  Each year we spend a significant amount of money to maintain and improve the youth baseball fields in New Canaan.  These improvements benefit our baseball youth and the community as a whole.

Here are a few of the improvements currently underway:

Saxe Middle School Baseball Field

Work began in the fall to greatly improve drainage issues and to transform the current 50/70 Majors field into a convertible field that can also host games in lower divisions that use a smaller (46/60) field.  This will provide much more capacity and flexibility in scheduling games for the Minors divisions.  It will also give us more capacity in the event we wish to host local and regional baseball tournaments. In addition, we will be adding a shed next to the Saxe field to house field preparation equipment and baseball equipment needed for games and practices. The work on Saxe field will be completed prior to the 2018 Spring season.

Field Renovations at Mead Park

New Canaan Baseball and the Town of New Canaan, in a public-private partnership, have agreed to jointly fund a renovation of the youth fields (Mellick and Gamble) at Mead Park.  These renovations include new artificial turf infields, complete regrading, new fencing, new backstops, new scoreboards and greatly improved drainage.  Mellick Field will be expanded in size to accommodate local and regional Cal Ripken tournaments and will be convertible from 46/60 to 50/70 to house teams of ages up to 12 years old.  Gamble Field will be upgraded with the enhancements mentioned above but will be solely for use in the Minors divisions (46/60).

Our committee is working to finalize field specifications and hope to be able to break ground by August 1 to have the project completed in time for Opening Day in the Spring of 2019.
